Hummingbird Sighting (Adult Male)

Date: 08/23/2017

Number: 5

A tragedy witnessed today. Male hummer slowly drifted to ground, landing on a rock..I observed from back patio door as it obviously died...neck feathers were in disarray...it folded its neck back and wings were extended. I went into garage to get gloves to retrieve the body and then, when I got to body...it was gone! At the same time I heard a larger ( jay or blackbird) bird leave the tree under which the body had been. It must have been an instance of predation ...I was out of sight of the little guy for less than a minute. I am sure it was dead( watched with binoculars when I saw it landing on the ground). Never have witnessed a predator other than neighboring cats try to take a hummer!
