I thought there was a place to report milkweed observations, but can't find it now. My observation is:
Today I saw a new patch of fresh green milkweed -- when I looked around I found it full of monarch cats, whereas the areas I've been collecting all summer are nearly bare of cats. These were huge and healthy. The Milkweed had been mowed earlier in the summer and resprouted. It has new little flower buds. (All the other milkweed is about dried up and flowers have turned to pods. New flowers are evident only where the plant was cut earlier (by me probably, as I collected cats there...) Personally I take this as evidence that it would be good to variously mow patches of milkweed through the spring so they could provide food across a broader season.
Observation 2: I read this morning that the pods are favorite food for the cats. I have NEVER seen a cat on a pod, but I put a couple in one of my cages today and sure enough, the big cats are onto it. This is great news for feeding,as fresh milkweed is getting scarce this late in the summer).
