Hummingbird, Nectaring from Flowers

Date: 08/29/2017

Number: 2

Two female or juvenile RT hummingbirds seen feeding on white althea bush blooms. Rainy day and cool (upper 60's). Three male RT hummers (reported under male adults) protected each of the 3 feeders I have up currently so the females or juveniles were having trouble getting to them. Although althea bushes(Hibiscus syriacus, frequently called Rose of Sharon) are invasive non natives, here in VA, I have found my bush to be one of the surest sources of fall nectar for the RTs. There are 5 newer varieties that are sterile and so don't self seed. I haven't tried any of them yet to see how they are as nectar sources. These are large bushes that grow to 10' high and 8' wide.
