Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/04/2017

Number: 12

September 1,2017 was the first wave week here of male and sub adult male Ruby throats. 7 feeders are out while they charged and challenged their territory especially with feeders hung under pergola. My neighbor helps with 2 additional feeders. It is hard to get an exact count, but when Mike started the lawn mower I saw 8 scattered into oak trees all at once just in front yard.
Now we have 5 new sub adults with one injured beak tip I know is from one of those metal flowered hummingbird feeders used I see in photos all the time on JN reports. I wish they would take off the market those metal port flower feeders that stick up because I regularly see tips of hummer beaks that got stuck in them. Hummers come thru with beaks that are broken off, bent beaks, and one ruby could not close his beak last fall. This is sad to see all the time.
