Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/04/2017

Number: 1

A previously reported mature 4th instar caterpillar today reached the successful completion of the 5th instar stage. About 2 hours ago, the caterpillar began the pupation process and is in a J position. The caterpillar continues to appear healthy. It is presently attached to a leaf of Asclepias tuberosa, a concern. Frequent checks of the chrysalis are planned should a risk arise to its safety during pupation.

Considering sunset is imminent, the caterpillar will be checked again in the morning for progress. Hopefully by that time it will have completed the final molt and will be safely encased in a well-formed, securely attached chrysalis.
