Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 09/04/2017

Number: 11

Beautiful day so we took a hike on a section of the Appalachian Trail in Pomfret, to the top of Dana Hill.

The open meadow there had been grazed earlier in the summer, and the milkweed was standing high in different patches all over the meadow.

We began casually looking for Monarch larvae and were rewarded by finding 11 larvae in different stages throughout the meadow!

Some larvae were on the oldest and least appetizing looking milkweed plants, and some were on the greener and fresher looking plants. We saw one fifth instar caterpillar that had managed to virtually strip a whole plant of leaves while one or two feet away several other, fresher looking plants were growing!
