a vagrant male arrived after our two local males departed. this new male was hesitant at first, but now more than a week later has taken to defending the feeder from all others - juveniles and adult females - to such an extent that the others now seldom come. perhaps trying to avoid a defensive male is energetically costly when easy feeding might be expected.
