Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/05/2017

Number: 1

The female was saw appeared to be laying eggs on our common milkweed, but we haven't been able to find any eggs on the plant. There are a lot of ants and other bugs hanging around the milkweed now so maybe they found the eggs (?)
Last week we saw another female monarch laying eggs and found one egg on the tuberosa milkweed. We brought it in to raise and protect it from the many small wasps we also see hanging around the milkweed. It's a 4th instar now. This week, I found a 3rd instar caterpillar on that same tuberosa. Also found a 4th instar on a common milkweed plant in our yard. Brought both in to raise and the bigger one just started j-hanging today. Normally, I like just have milkweed in the yard to give the monarchs a better chance of surviving. BUT this year, we've seen so few monarchs that we wanted to give them an even better chance of surviving by taking them in. So far, so good.
