I saw two larvae in this patch of Milkweed the other day, so I returned today and spotted the larger of the two, fifth instar, moving away from the milkweed that it had been eating. It was moving faster than I expected, off the milkweed onto thin blades of grass and onto some ferns. I'd estimate it traveled 24" in about 3 to 4 minutes!
The other larvae was not a fifth instar, perhaps a fourth instar, and it was off the milkweed, too, maybe 6" away.
Picture is of the moving 5th instar.
