In the morning, we noticed the chrysalis had turned black. When I arrived home after church at approximately 11:00 am I found the pictured female Monarch on the same sunflower plant with the now clear, cracked open chrysalis. It flapped there for at least 30 minutes, crawling gradually higher in the plant. When my grandsons arrived to see it - it immediately flew high up into the Ponderosa Pine on the edge of the yard and suddenly a 2nd one appeared in the Jupiter's Beard flowers right next to the milkweed were we 1st saw the caterpillars. That one quickly flew up over the roof before I could get a picture. First full lifecycle observed on our property.
