Saw monarchs laying eggs on August 15 and 22. As usual in past 15 years, collected milkweed plants with eggs. Put stems in oasis with water. No hatches in 14-17 days. Microscopic x40 mag show empty ova. Could eggs have been infertile? Some have a tiny piece of shell missing, near apex. Could there be a tiny predator that can pass through mesh the fineness of window screening? Fields are fallow, no spraying or cultivation since 2007
