I sighted a single monarch flying strongly, resolutely and directionally south at about 350' to 500' in altitude at 11:30 am CT today. The car's temperature gauge read 78 degrees F; my phone's weather application indicated the wind was from the NNE at 5 mph.
The butterfly's path was clearly due south, so I followed it in my car on North May Avenue, beginning at the intersection of NW 50th Street to NW 10th Street. It was still flying south at the same approximate altitude above North May Avenue when I turned west and then north to go home. My strong impression is the butterfly was also headed for home--to the Oyamel fir forest in Mexico.
