Monarch PEAK Migration
Sightings report image

Date: 09/16/2017

Number: 5

For us, seeing five monarchs within 5 minutes is peak migration. Three of the butterflies were nectaring on red clover. The other two were on the dirt road, taking in salts. We've seen this behavior before. The road is sprayed with calcium chloride to control dust. Evidently the calcium chloride makes a salt solution when it absorbs moisture from the air and the road.
