Sightings report image

Number: 2

I have a butterfly garden where I had 25 caterpillars of different sizes in August. I have watched for the caterpillars all summer. We had monarchs in our garden in June and July, but no larvae that we could see through June and July. In years past we saw larvae in July, put them in a nursery to develop, and set them free. This year our larvae did not show up until mid-late August. We put them in a nursery and now they are almost all developed and free. Last year we had 5 larvae, and in many years before that we have had 1-2 only. My husband is a statistician and professor at the University of Michigan, and he is fascinated by this increase in our yard. I wonder why we had so many this year? We'd like to think it is our garden, which has gotten better over the years, but it is probably not that alone.

I am very excited to have found your project. If you need a statistician, I've got one here! You can contact me at my email address. I realize your project may be huge and interacting with individuals may be too much. I won't be disappointed if you cannot reply.
