Uncommonly high temperatures continue in the Midwest--we had 90 degrees in Michigan today, and my migrating guests are still with us. We've never had so many hummingbird guests this late in the migrating season. They've quickly moved in, are very social with me, and enjoying the masses of flowers throughout the habitat; and spending a great deal of time by the entry garden near our front door. They are comfortable being within 2 feet of me as I water "their flowers" :-) Primarily feasting / necturing from Wendy's Wish salvia which is in BIG pots--these plants measure approximately 4 feet high by 4 feet wide--providing a lot of flowers :-) Lantana, Cuphea "Vermillionaire", Black and Blue Salvia, Turtle Heads, Blue Lobelia, and Obedient Plants are constantly receiving humming bird attention. Feeders are still available, but usually ignored--as flowers are preferred, until a few minutes before bedtime--approximately 7:15 PM, when they may enjoy a sip or two from the feeder. They went to bed at 7:33 PM. Our guests spent most of the day necturing from flowers, and flying, perching, preening, between the dogwood tree, and the tall oak tree near the west side of the house, These trees are overlooking "their flowers" :-) Thursday, temperatures are predicted to return tothe 60s; so
expect our migrating guests will leave by mid week.
