Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/24/2017

Number: 12

About a dozen monarchs in our yard and another half-dozen around the southwest part of Minneapolis. The monarchs were competing with painted ladies for spots on Tithonia, but they seemed to have the tropical milkweed to themselves. Lantana Dallas Red was popular with both. Intensive nectaring by the huge numbers of painted ladies has left some flowers fully-pollinated and no longer available. Fortunately, asters are blooming profusely in the last couple days, as the butterflies wait for favorable winds.
