Saw a female ruby throated hummingbird on a nectar feeder at 7:00 a.m. She drank for a bit and flew off, but not southward. Thought this would be last sighting of the season. But at 5:50 p.m. a female hummer was sitting in a lilac tree preening her feathers. Based on the propensity to perch in the same tree and feeder preference I think this was the same hummer observed in the morning. She drank for a bit and flew off to north. Then I believe this same hummer returned around 7:00 p.m. to the lilac tree to perch and feed from the same nectar feeder. She fed on a nearby firecracker and black & blue salvia also. She made a final feeding on the nectar feeder for 3-4 minutes until finally leaving to roost for the night at 7:16 p.m. She really hung in there until there was hardly any light in the sky. It was a lot of fun watching the little zipper for about a quarter of an hour. Sept. 29 was last sighting of a hummer in our yard last year. Today ties that benchmark. The day was sunny with high temperature in the 60's.
