At about 5:15 PM today I stopped by a small field north of Jacksonville Road in Spring Township, PA, where three weeks ago I had spotted a few Monarch caterpillars, to see if there were any common milkweed seeds ready for collection. Most of the pods were still green. However, I did briefly see a Monarch butterfly circle over the field and then disappear up into some nearby trees.
This location is a bit less than 1.5 miles WSW from the spot where I reported seeing two Monarch butterflies earlier this afternoon. Conditions at this time weren’t much different from what was the case for that earlier report. The sky was mostly cloudy with the wind blowing from the WSW at about 8 mph.
