I was shocked to see this chrysalis shell on my English lavender today! This was the first year that I planted milkweed and I spotted two 5th instar caterpillars on it about 2 weeks ago. I checked for chrysalides shortly thereafter but did not locate any in the vicinity. I am thinking this shell belonged to one of the caterpillars and it was under my nose the whole time!
The lavender is only about two feet from the milkweed plant; the lavender is also low to the ground so I was surprised to see the shell was low to the ground as well. I thought the butterfly would need more space for its wings to dry???
This is very exciting and I cannot wait to plant more milkweed next year!!!
