Sightings report image

Date: 10/03/2017

Number: 2

The monarchs stopped coming to our 5th story rooftop deck the past 3-5 days, and showed up again just before 2 PM today. It is sunny calm and warmer today at 25C. One of the two monarchs was clearly more active than the other as it was flitting more from flower to flower and pot to pot. It was old and one wing was battered with a good piece missing, and the over all colour had faded. The two monarchs were in the white daisies and the one seen more clearly in my photos spent a good bit of time in the 3 pots of orange marigolds we have on the deck (which bumble bees and monarchs alike seem to love). All the monarchs from the past 2 weeks seem to be very skittish, especially since the weather hss gotten cooler...more so than in other years. They fly away, off our big deck, at the first sound of our voices and are more aware of deck sounds than in previous years. Just an observation as I have lived here and been on this deck for 22 years now. I have pinpointed the location of our deck exactly, in the NW corner of the building. We have lots of flowers and a 20 X 30 foot deck.
