Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/03/2017

Number: 1

At about 11:35 AM today (10/3/2017) I briefly spotted a Monarch butterfly fluttering westward, staying near the south side of the terminal and between 5 and 10 feet above the ramp here at University Park Airport (SCE) in State College, PA.   This is similar to reports I’ve filed earlier on 9/10/2017, 9/21/2017, 9/26/2017, and 10/1/2017.   My guess is that they stay close to the south side of the terminal as they fly past the airport because it serves as a bit of a windbreak for a length of over 700 feet.

At the time of this observation it was clear and sunny with:

  • Temperature   64F
  • Dew point   48F
  • Relative Humidity   59%
  • Pressure   30.60 inches
  • Wind   from the south at about 5 mph (and increasing to about 10 mph for the next five hours)

Bellefonte, PA
