Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 10/04/2017

Number: 3

Still have a few hanging around.

Editor's Note:
In the fall, signs of molting can be seen. This young male is just getting the first red neck feathers. His brilliant gorget will finish filling out on the wintering grounds after migration. Juvenile hummingbirds are the last to leave and do not migrate with a parent. They set off on their first migration alone. They instinctively put on weight, fly in a southerly direction, and find a suitable place to spend the winter.
