I saw one (1) late 4th instar caterpillar on autumn sage (Salvia greggii) late this afternoon after the heavy rain showers stopped. It appeared to have fallen from the nearby milkweed (Asclepias curassavica) and was hanging on a sage twig. After watching it for several minutes, it successfully negotiated the approximate 24†journey from the sage plant to a milkweed plant.
This year, monarch caterpillars have been particularly elusive to find. I’ll look for this one tomorrow, although it will likely prove to be well-hidden from sight.
