Very small but healthy female feeding on my asters. Did not return the next day.
Though it is true that most do not very in size overall, a smaller than normal does occur in my experiences.
I have found that when food is scarce the caterpillar may chrysalis early, or if it is infected or parasitized. I am very sure it was a female monarch.
