Twenty (20) monarchs were sighted in the garden today. Two (2) demonstrated mating behavior; the remaining 18 demonstrated a single mindedness, nectaring primarily on tropical milkweed (Asclepias curassavica). The attached picture shows 4 of of the 18 butterflies on tropical milkweed. A short distance away there was a fifth monarch, also nectaring on a milkweed bloom, in the same section of the garden.

The monarchs began to arrive around 8:15 am CT despite the low 60s temperature. The last ones departed around 6:30 pm CT, as the cold front began to replace the muggy warmth of a fall day in the 80s with what will become an overnight low in the mid-40s.
