I saw 3 monarchs today in the garden between 2:15 and 5:45 pm CT. They arrived within a few minutes of the sun emerging as the cloud cover lifted. Their late appearance and diminished number were due to the arrival of an overnight cold front with a chilly low of 45 and an afternoon high of 60 degrees. The temperature was 58 degrees at the time of their arrival; the wind was from the NNW at a brisk 15 mph.
The butterflies spent time sunning themselves and nectaring on the tropical milkweed (Asclepias curassavica). The cold made their movements sluggish and slowed their reaction times, allowing me to capture the attached picture of one of three, a beautiful male, enjoying the sun’s warmth.
