Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 10/10/2017

Number: 8

Being retired has it's advantages. I decided to spend most of the day on the patio, seeing if I had more southward migrating hummer visitors at my feeders. The whole day was going to be in the mid 70 degrees, partly cloudy and very little breeze. The following is a brief summary of my observations. At 7:40am The tiny hummer girl whom visited the feeder late Monday nite obviously roosted in the dense evergreen hedge. the temp at the time was 55 degrees. At 9:25 another female stopped at the feeder then perched in the patio tree for ten minutes, hit the feeder again and then took off southward. I had hummer female visitors at the patio area feeders then again at 11:01am, 11:15am, 11:35, 1:15pm and 2pm. All of these seven were different hummer females which I verified by comparing the photos and short videos I took of each one. I kept an eye on the feeders the rest of the afternoon, but didn't see any further activity. Later before dark at 7:15pm I heard a hummer buzz by behind me and land at the patio feeder 5 feet away from where I was sitting. I managed to grab my camera, but the lighting was too dark for a good photo. Given the 5 hour time difference between this sighting and the last sighting I suspect it was a different female also. However once she finished drinking she flew to the west toward our evergreen hedge that I suspected our overnight Monday hummer roosted in. Maybe too, I'll see this one again in the morning before she continues on south. Currently it's raining outdoors this early morning Wednesday am. Temperatures are expected to be a low of 52 degrees during the early AM hours and only get up to about 64 for a high, with showers predicted off and on all day Wednesday and occasional 10 -15 mph gusts. At the present, this is the latest date I've ever seen migrating hummers pass through at my place.
