Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 10/11/2017

Number: 4

Temperatures here today from noon on stayed around mid 50's. Mostly light rain or drizzle with a pause around 2pm to 5pm. Migrating hummer tally for today - 3 (females)positive separate individuals with the fourth (female) sighting possibly also a separate individual. The first one was seen at 3:48pm - 57 degrees - drizzling - breeze of 5 mph. The second one stopped at 5:04pm - 56 degrees - light drizzle- no breeze and took cover in the evergreen hedge fifteen feet away, making at least two other trips to the patio feeder. Hummer number three stopped by the patio feeder about 6;25pm -56 degrees.- no breeze - no precipitation. This was a pretty plump female (attached photo). She drank and sat then drank again for about 6 minutes before heading to the west, returning 5 minutes later for another couple of minutes, at which time she flew westward again, maybe roosting in the lone Emerald Green arborvitae on the west side of the house. Then when I think that's it for the night at 7:01pm -55 degrees- misty drizzle - barely a breeze, I spotted a hummer on the patio feeder. It went eastward into the dense evergreen hedge. In the last three days I have spotted more migrating hummers than any year prior. Also this is the latest date I've ever spotted a hummerin our area.

I hope everyone keeps their feeders out long after they've seen their "last" hummer. Prior to these last three days there was a 17 day time frame in which I saw no hummingbirds at our feeders.
