Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/14/2017

Number: 10

Ten (10) monarchs arrived in the garden between 8:30 and 9:15 am today, nectaring on the tropical milkweed and pentas blooms. The weather was forecast to be hot and windy, and it was accurate; the high was 89 degrees with a persistently gusting wind from the south at 23 mph.

The 10 butterflies remained in the garden for awhile after their arrival, but as the wind persisted and they struggled to reach and hold onto blooms, their number began to thin around 1:00 pm. As of this writing at 6:15 pm, only 2 monarchs remain in the garden nectaring on the tropical milkweed blooms.

It has been a tough day in the central part of the state to be a migrating monarch. Another cold front is forecast to arrive overnight, which should lower tomorrow’s high to the mid to high 60s and shift the direction of the wind to the north. Perhaps tomorrow will bring more favorable nectaring and flying conditions for our migrating friends.
