Today I decided to try and use my butterfly net to capture and tag a monarch this late in the season at noon. I went to Harrisville State Park and saw a monarch flying high among cedar trees. I then went to the Harrisville Harbor and found no monarchs. I then went to the post office in the City of Harrisville and saw one monarch flying close to the ground. I netted a female in mid air and took her into the post office to show the employees how I tagged them. They were so delighted! Tag is XCS-848. I went home and released her in my flower garden at 1:30 PM. I later went out to see if she was there and observed her with another female monarch at 2 PM. They both were gone at 2:30 PM. Weather was sunny, temperature 68F., and the wind S-14 mph gusting to 23 mph.
