Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/19/2017

Number: 1

I was working out on the ramp today (October 19, 2017)following the departure of AA Flight 4250 from the University Park Airport in State College when I spotted a Monarch butterfly flying by (at lat 40.8510° and long -77.8506°).   It flew at an average of only about two feet above the ramp, clearly struggling but making slow steady progress to the south against a headwind of about nine miles per hour from the SSW.

At the time of this observation (11:23 AM EDT) the sky was mostly sunny with:

  • Temperature     about 63°F
  • Dew point     about 45°F
  • Relative Humidity     about 54%
  • Pressure     30.21 inches
  • Wind     blowing from the SSW at about 9 mph
