Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 10/24/2017

Number: 22

With a few breaks in the clouds and periods of light rain, 22 brave Monarch Butterflies attempted to gather nectar despite strong 20 MPH sustained winds with gusts near 40 MPH.

One Monarch Butterfly was observed in flight fighting the strong winds and unable to land on a butterfly bush near the Long Island Sound as it was violently pushed inland on each attempt.

Other Monarch Butterflies landed on butterfly bushes located further inland from the Long Island Sound and gathered nectar to the best of their ability as the sustained winds violently blew the blossoms.

I included a photo of a wind-effected image with part of my cell phone (the only stationary object) in the background to illustrate how strong the winds were and the conditions these brave butterflies faced.
