Butterfly breeder and enthusiast Dave Clermont in Chambly, Quebec, has a 100 acre farm with butterfly breeding operation consisting of greenhouses, lab, nursery garden, and he writes today. :

"I still see monarchs flying around here (southern Quebec) and I'm not surprised, seeing how hot it was in september and october, females were laying eggs up until mid / late september around here from my observations, and what we are seeing are the offsprings of those late egg hatchlings. I believe this isn't so unusual, since gravid females from pre-migration groups can lay eggs up until very late in the season, but it is unusual for those eggs to get to maturity and generate this extremely late generation that would have normally been stalled or killed by the cold days. it only froze once overnight so far in my area."
