Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/27/2017

Number: 3

Observed three Monarch butterflies in a grassy right-of-way located between the South Grand Island Bridges on Interstate I190 in the Town of Tonawanda. The Monarchs were nectaring on flowers of two different plant species located in the grassy, occasionally-mowed habitat. One plant is believed to be Red Clover or a close relative. The other plant with yellow, dandelion-like flowers is believed to be some sort of Sow Thistle.
I've been wondering what plants are being used as nectar sources for these late-flying Monarchs, especially since most native asters and goldenrods are way past flower blooms at this time of year. Interestingly, Red Clover is a non-native plant. Depending on the species of Sow Thistle, this plant may also be non-native.
