A male was spotted at 2PM in a butterfly meadow on a red clover blossom. It was small and I first thought that it was an orange gulf as the meadow is full of them. AS I approached it flew over the pasture and came back and quickly flew off again headed south. As far as I could see there were no blooming plants except maybe a clover here and there for it to sip nectar.
( Personal: I have been torn about whether to have plantings close to roadsides and have read a lot about it. However, seeing this monarch flying over fescue pastures and mowed easements I ponder more. What is the right thing to do overall to connect flyways? I am working with an elementary school on developing a butterfly/pollinator garden and plan to involve parents.
And, I love this new site update. It is like we're old friends {which we are} as it says "Hello Barbara" as soon as I clicked on! Thanks. Barbara)
