Oct. 18 - one monarch before frost on dahlia flower. Did not see butterfly on milkweed plant which was no longer blooming. Had 3 milkweed plants. Did not see any Monarch previously this year.
2017
4 milkweed plants. Two in partial shade. No caterpillar or butterfly activity noticed. Two in full sun had much activity.
7/26 - 2 monarchs on milkweed flowers and on leaves
8/4 - 2 monarchs on milkweed flowers and on leaves. Even on leaves when plants were in shade.
8/12 - monarchs on butterfly bush, milkweed and zinnias
8/19 - large monarch caterpillar on milkweed. Medium caterpillar too. On plant by patio.
8/20 - medium caterpillar on milkweed plant in veg garden
8/20 - small caterpillar on milkweed plant in veg garden
8/22 - large caterpillar gone from milkweed by patio. Still two medium caterpillars and one tiny caterpillar
8/24 - large caterpillar taking walk on grassy lawn. saved from lawnmower & put in jar.
8/25- chrysalis formed over night
8/28 - monarch flying around garden
8/28 - monarch caterpillars gone from milkweed in veg garden.
8/30 - very small monarch caterpillar on milkweed in veg garden (already bigger by 9/1)
9/1 - now 2 medium caterpillars on milkweed in veg garden (one from 8/30)
9/2 - new medium caterpillar on milkweed in yard
9/8 - new large caterpillar on milkweed in veg/flower garden
new large caterpillar on milkweed in yard
9/8 - Monarch butterfly hatched from chrysalis under picnic bench. fell to ground and never moved. dead. saw it was tangled in spider webbing
9/8 - located a chrysalis on different picnic bench. appears to have puncture hole
9/10 - Monarch butterfly sighted flying in garden
9/10 - all caterpillars gone from plants
9/10 - noticed chrysalis in jar changing to darker color with colors of butterfly showing through
9/12 - Monarch in jar hatched. Climbed out of jar onto wall. fluttered off and on all day. Lying on ground at midnight. thought was dead.
9/13 - butterfly back hanging on wall
9/14 - butterfly not dead. walked about ten feet from wall, seemed to take nourishment from the wet grass. Flew off into trees!
9/14 - butterfly hatched from chrysalis with puncture hole under picnic table bench. flew away to garden
9/14 - Monarch sighted on zinnia
9/18 - Monarch fluttering around-settled on dahlia-then gone
9/21 - new big caterpillar on milkweed in veg/flower garden
9/25 - Monardch in veg/flower garden, especially on zinnia
9/29 - 2 new chrysalises on milkweed in yard
10/3 - Monarch on orange dahlia
10/4 - 4 Monarchs in veg/flower garden
10/4 - 2 Monarchs emerged from 2 chrysalises. After 5 hours, still not flying. Gone by 10/5
10/4 - Monarch with missig wing parts dying on front lawn
10/5 - 3 or 4 or more Monarchs in veg/flower garden
10/7 - 7 Monarchs on zinnias and dahlias
10/8 - 10 Monarchs on zinnias and dahlias
10/9 - 4 Monarchs - rainy day
10/10 - no Monarchs
10/13 - 2 Monarchs on zinnia
10/15 - Monarch on zinnia
10/17 - Monarch emerged from chrysalis hanging from garden fence. climbed onto nearby plant. Hung there till around noon the next day. Then was gone
10/19 to 10/24 - Monarch on zinnia.
