Tulips PLANTED
Sightings report image

We are excited that our school is participating in the Journey North Tulip Test Garden project for the third consecutive year! We experienced a much warmer than typical fall, with temperatures 10-15 degrees above average. The weather finally cooled and our Mifflin Park 1st and 4th grade citizen science buddies planted 100 Red Emperor tulip bulbs the morning of November 9th. It was cloudy and the temperature was recorded at 43 degrees the day we planted. We carefully measured to make sure the bulbs were planted 7 inches deep. Students recorded the following observation in their journals, “The soil was dark chocolate brown, very soft, wet and clumping together.” We’re wondering how tulips grow roots in winter when there isn’t much sunlight.
