Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 11/16/2017

Number: 1

One monarch butterfly was observed flying low near the outdoor garden by the conservatory. The monarch butterfly circled around a large pine tree looking for fresh flowers to nectar on. With the flowers in the vicinity in generally poor condition, the monarch never landed and headed south. At the time, the sun had broken through the clouds and the temperature was 57 F. Even though I was skeptical of seeing any, its presence showed that small numbers have the ability to survive night time temperatures in the low 20s. Sadly, my zoom lens did not lock on the monarch because of its size vs. the patch of sky and numerous pine branches and my haste to take the picture before it was obscured by the pine tree that my camera did not take a photograph.
