Red-winged Blackbird (FIRST sighted)

Date: 02/20/2018

Number: 1

Submitted by Don Davis:

Quinten Wiegersma from London, Ontario, spotted in Virginia Park Red-winged Blackbirds with red epaulettes. 6 were flyovers (group of 4, 1, and 1), and 1 was singing (conk-a-ree!) Not unexpected given the record warm temperatures today.

Afternoon Update: Although not all too rare, I thought I would just write a quick post on the blackbirds in north London.

The first wave of blackbirds for the area came in this morning (I was out all day yesterday and saw none), starting with seven Red-winged Blackbirds. Throughout the day their numbers gradually increased, and a few males have seemed to begin setting up shop.

Late this afternoon I came across a flock of around 90 Red-winged Blackbirds and Common Grackles, which for this area is an exceptional number for this date (at this time last year I had only seen one Red-winged). I expect numbers to keep building in the coming days.

I saw the large blackbird flock off of Sunningdale Rd. in North London, between Richmond street and Adelaide street. There are a couple nice places in the neighborhood (Uplands Trail, Virginia Park etc.) that were also productive for blackbirds and other songbirds today, and Uplands had a Fox Sparrow yesterday.
