There appeared to be a huge influx of monarchs yesterday (3/14). I’d say I saw 20 total over 4 miles. A friend had close to 100 on Matagorda Island ~35 miles north of me on the same day.
Most of the butterflies I saw were in the same general area, in twos or threes. Many I saw were flying along the highway. Some were brownish and worn; I saw one with a wing tear.
I’m a wildlife biologist with USFWS. I’m a bird person so I don’t know as much as I should about monarchs, but I’m confident these were migrants.
I didn’t get any pictures on the 14th but I’ll be out in the field again tomorrow (3/16). I haven’t seen any milkweed yet but if I do, I’ll look for eggs.
