A Clay-colored Sparrow, a very rare bird for Florida, has been enjoying my hospitality in my yard since Dec 23, officially 83 days today. Along with it, another one arrived for one day, placing 2 in my yard at same time. This is probably a first anywhere outside its breeding range, let alone in a private yard! We are suffering a cold spell for the 3rd time this spring. Once the winds shift from mostly NW and N, it will feel the yearning of breeding time and depart. Too soon for me. Just right for it. Males and females look alike but it calls so I believe it may be a male. It will return to the grasslands of Canada, small areas of northern US and Yukon. It’s a long way from home! I’ll post here when he leaves.
