Altus and I made a trip out west of Port Lavaca just after one today (18th). As we were leaving town a Monarch passed overhead about 15 ft. Out in the country we were going to check the progress of the milkweed out there. As we idled along one of the farm roads about 6 miles west of town I was looking at milkweed when we caught up with a large female monarch just off the pavement doing her serpentine flight down the ditch about a foot off the ground. She came within six feet of me, showed the wear I expect of a remigrant but not terribly faded, orange was rather dark.
My brother told me yesterday that he had seen two monarchs earlier in the week, one Wed (14th) at the pasture in DeWitt Co and a second on Fri
(16th) in Port O'Connor in Calhoun Co. The pasture had a nice shower early
last week, picked up 1.5 inches of rain ... the first in a long time. Drought!
