Leucistic Robin in a yard with other robins.
Editor's Note: This robin has unusual coloration because it lacks some pigments. Ornithologists call this condition leucistic. One of the pigments this bird lacks is called melanin. Melanin gives feathers a brown-gray, or black tone. That is why the parts of this robin that should be dark are almost white. Leucism or dilution is a genetic condition when birds produce less-than-normal amounts of normal pigments.
