This was a wonderful monarch day! Between 11:30 am to 2:00 pm I saw at least 4 female monarchs egg-laying and at times resting. It was around 76 degrees F, cloudy, with a light breeze and 64% humidity. It was very nice to quietly follow the fluttering monarchs as they searched for the just-right milkweed. They sometimes rested in the grass for long moments after their efforts. I also saw a male monarch flying around in the area and at one point he chased one of the females. They flew upwards, spiraling crazily till out of my sight in the trees. She must have eluded him, because he returned pretty quickly. The milkweed is now fairly abundant ~ with most plants still in the early stages of growth or just sprouts peeking out of the soil, but some of the stem types are quite tall and usually in a group of 3 or more. This is a photo of a monarch as she lays an egg in the crown of a tender young milkweed.
