This was a day filled with monarchs! It started with a female monarch nectaring on wild blackberry blossoms along the fence line & and laying eggs on nearby young milkweed plants. Throughout the day I saw females laying eggs, nectaring, and resting & males flying, seeking females, and defending wildflower patches (and potted verbena flowers). I am not sure of the exact numbers of individual monarchs, but I had at least 17 sightings of monarchs over the course of the day ~ some of which I followed & observed for awhile. It was lovely weather in the mid-70's, light breezes, cloudy, and with humidity around 75%.
Unfortunately, after dark we had a terrible hailstorm come through at 7:30 pm. The hail did much damage and harmed some of the milkweed and already laid eggs. Around 8:30 pm I collected a few of the hailstones ~ some were still as large as 1 1/4 inch across.
