Monarch Egg (FIRST sighted)
Sightings report image

Date: 03/29/2018

Number: 1

Last week I saw, and caught, a female monarch in Savannah, GA, on March 29. Interestingly, at the time I was shoring up our experimental butterfly gardens at this location, and replacing some milkweeds. The milkweed that had been in them had died so I was in the middle of planting some new plants (tropical milkweed!). About an hour after I planted them, she showed up and started laying on them. I caught her - literally and figuratively - in the act. She was fairly worn, and had the look of an old adult that had overwintered - somewhere. Mexico maybe? We have her back at the lab at UGA now, where she is laying still. We checked and she was negative for OE.
