In the morning around 9am I saw a female monarch nectaring on blackberry flowers and resting in our front yard. As I went around the pastures from 9:30 to 11am, I saw 3 egg-laying females and at least 1 male who was flying, nectaring, sunbathing, and chasing the females. One of the females had soft-colored faded wings and a small tear in her left wing. I followed her as she laid quite a few eggs on milkweed. At that time it was 73 degrees F, windy, cloudy, with 68% humidity.
Later in the day as I had chances to step outside, I observed monarchs flying and nectaring (often on Yellow and Purple Thistles) ~ and one mated pair flying past our barn.
This is a photo of the lovely monarch I followed this morning as she laid one of her eggs on tender green milkweed.
