Sightings report image

Date: 03/31/2018

Number: 10

Today I continued to see monarchs nectaring, egg-laying, sunning, and flying
~ sometimes males tussling in the air with other males and sometimes males chasing females.

At 11am it was sunny, breezy, 72 degrees F, and with 56% humidity. I actually almost stepped on a female resting/sunning in the grass as I checked on one of the more remote corners of our pastures ~ luckily she had quick reflexes and simply flew to a new resting location for her morning meditation.

In another section I observed a female who was laying eggs. She had very tattered thin wings, but was still devotedly finding good milkweed to lay her eggs on.
I will add a follow-up photo of her
to a Monarch (OTHER Observations) report.

Later this afternoon I began a 2-day milkweed survey to count monarch eggs and larvae, so was not able to focus on the monarchs ~ just enjoyed them sailing by now and then.

This is a photo of a monarch with tattery wings (I think a male) as he nectars from a Purple Thistle (Cirsium horridulum) that is just beginning to bloom.
