We had a storm system come through the night before with only light rain for us, but it had brought cooler temperatures. At around 12 noon it was 63 degrees F, sunny, 28% humidity, with strong gusty winds. I followed a female monarch as she flew (blew) about the upper pasture variously resting/sunbathing and finding milkweed to lay her eggs on. She was amazing! The wind was buffeting me about and she would fly straight into it making good headway. At one point a male sailed by ~ she dropped down quickly into the grass until he was well away ~ then resumed her milkweed search.

Later, out my kitchen window, I saw a monarch nectaring from a yellow thistle ~ chased away by a carpenter bee ~ at least briefly.

This is a photo of the female monarch who was actively laying eggs at mid-day. Here she is resting/sunning in a warm, low spot as she has a bit of a respite from the strong winds today.
