Today was a warm day with gentle breezes and sweet fragrances from the spring flowers and blooming wild grapevines. At 9:30am it was 73 degrees F, overcast, with 84% humidity. It would stay mostly cloudy with high humidity and by 1pm it was 79 degrees F. I followed two female monarchs as they went about laying eggs and saw males nectaring, flying, and looking for females. I continued to see monarchs throughout the day.
This is a photo of a very faded-winged female monarch as she nectars from a pink thistle (Cirsium horridulum). Seconds after this photo a male monarch spotted her and grabbed at her, but she held her ground (her pink thistle) and he decided not to persist and flew away ~ she went back to getting some nourishing nectar.
